On August 10th, the launch ceremony for the five-part documentary series on significant historical figures, titled "He Xiangning," was held at Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering. The production is expected to wrap up by the end of this year, with its release scheduled for next year.
2024 marks the 146th anniversary of He Xiangning's birth and the 97th anniversary of the founding of Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering. As explained by Song Yaozhen, the university's Party Secretary, in 1925, He Xiangning and others proposed the establishment of Zhongkai Agricultural and Technical School to honor the memory of the great patriot Liao Zhongkai and his dedication to the welfare of farmers and workers. The school officially enrolled students in March 1927, initially offering courses in sericulture and agriculture, with He Xiangning serving as its first president. She was not only an outstanding artist but also a remarkable political activist and social reformer. As a prominent representative of the left wing of the Kuomintang, she played an active role in the Xinhai Revolution, contributing significantly to the overthrow of feudal monarchy and the establishment of a democratic republic. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, she led by example, raising funds through her artistic works to support wounded soldiers and refugees, demonstrating exceptional courage and commitment.
The documentary "He Xiangning" will utilize a wealth of rare historical footage combined with modern filmmaking techniques to retrace history's footsteps. Filming will take place across the country, vividly recreating He Xiangning's journey from revolutionary to nation-builder. Director and screenwriter Li Yiran stated, "The film will also feature interviews with eyewitnesses to history, delving into the core of He Xiangning's thoughts and character, revealing the unique qualities of this extraordinary woman."
"As a descendant of He Xiangning, producing this film is both a homage to our family's illustrious past and a significant cultural legacy and dialogue with the present era. He Xiangning's life was characterized by unwavering love for her country and people, and we hope that through cinematic storytelling, we can vividly portray her eventful life, allowing more people to learn about her life story and her spirit, thereby continuing and promoting her revolutionary ideals." said Liao Youzi, producer and executive producer of the documentary "He Xiangning."
It is worth noting that the production team behind "He Xiangning" is highly experienced. Chief director Zhang Yongxin directed the major revolutionary historical drama "The Age of Awakening" and won the Outstanding Director Award at the 33rd China TV Feitian Awards for this work; director and screenwriter Li Yiran has received the Best Documentary Award at the 24th Chinese Television Art "Starlight Awards." Additionally, many other seasoned industry professionals have contributed their expertise to the project.
The documentary comprises five episodes: "Clear Moon and Tranquility," "Blood Tomb and Mountain River," "Heroine in Armor," "Dead End and Rebirth," and "Unyielding Spirit and Brushwork." These episodes will present He Xiangning's early revolutionary career, her middle-aged efforts for national reunification, and her indomitable spirit as an artist, showcasing her life of revolution, struggle, and greatness.
