However, the paper boats that float suggest these stories may exist solely within his imagination; the flying fish from "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" that he so admires are met with skepticism by his nephew Xiao Zhou (Li Dingxu). In response, Wang Zhantuan takes a leap of faith by attaching a scallion to himself and attempting to fly from the rooftop, only to crash-land in a heap, nearly causing havoc at home, all to prove his belief that "everyone can fly." His peculiar actions often perplex those around him, but beneath them lies a self-contained world of thought. It is precisely this unique flight that resonates with Zhou Zheng (Wang Junkai), forging a deep connection between their souls.

"The Hedgehog" is adapted from Zheng Zhi's short story "The Immortal Syndrome." It tells the story of Wang Zhantuan, deemed a “madman,” and Zhou Zheng, a stuttering youth, who are considered oddballs in society yet find solace in each other as kindred spirits. Following his "Era Trilogy," director Gu Changwei once again focuses his lens on life's misfits and the voiceless, posing the question of whether one should conform or remain true to oneself in the face of monotonous daily routines.

Unlike the tender and profound storytelling of the "Era Trilogy," "The Hedgehog" uses the misunderstood duo of Wang Zhantuan and Zhou Zheng to provide a bold answer: we only live once, so be yourself, because there's nothing wrong with that! In a sea of humanity, having a single soulmate is enough. As the actors portraying Wang Zhantuan and Zhou Zheng, Ge You and Wang Junkai not only share a touching redemption on screen but also continue their friendship off-screen, referring to each other as "Uncle-in-Law" and "Zhou Zheng."

During filming, Ge You spontaneously asked Wang Junkai to sing, to which Wang Junkai responded with an impromptu performance, holding a microphone while shyly waving his hand, yet instinctively joining in.
